Brazil Charity Project - Casa de Santa Ana BrazilBrazil Travel Plan is a sponsor of Casa de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's House) a home for the elderly in one of the poorest slums in Rio de Janeiro. If you wish, you can even visit this Brazil charity project during your holiday.Padre Valentim Fagundes Menezes founded this home for poor and homeless elderly Brazilians in 1987. Several of his parishioners helped him run the home on the edge of the infamous slum Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro. The elderly needed help urgently, but unfortunately before long there were not enough resources to sustain the home. He was forced to close down only four years later. Luckily several months later social worker Maria de Lourdes Braz arrived to help support the home and she has been the driving force behind Santa Ana's House ever since. Santa Ana's House strives to improve living standards for the elderly living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. By assisting the elderly they are able to stay in their own familiar family environment without having to wither away in the streets - as many do. This Brazil charity project not only helps the elderly - it also strives to improve living standards for entire families in the community. Since most Brazil charity projects support orphanages, the elderly are often forgotten. That's why we believe Santa Ana's House is a very worthwhile cause. |
ActivitiesSanta Ana's House prepares meals, offers physical therapy, social and medical assistance, nursing, psychological assistance and other support for families. Last year approximately 150 elderly people with ages ranging from 60 –101 received assistance. Additionally this Brazil charity project provides food packages for 33 families, approximately 350 people, and activities for approximately 50 children and young adults belonging to poor families. Santa Ana's also brings young and old together by organising singing events, percussion and dance activities that bridge the generational gap. |

Hope for a better futureWith help from abroad and from local charity organisations, the foundation aims to expand its' activities. The foundation has for instance opened a Health Promotion Centre in the same neighbourhood, Cidade de Deus. Unfortunately though, the foundation does not yet have enough resources to run it properly.Visit the homeObviously the home is not a tourist attraction. However for those who are truly interested in the home, a visit can be scheduled during your Brazil trip.
