Bahia turtle beach

Praia do Forte trip

Route: Salvador de Bahia - Itacimirim/Praia do Forte

At one point in time the Amazon jungle covered most of Bahia. These days this area is known for its' kilometres of sandy beaches and an almost African atmosphere. From time to time you'll see a patch of jungle in this area, but mostly the coast is dotted with peaceful fishing villages such as Itacimirim and Praia do Forte. They are the ideal destinations for a short Bahia beach Brazil tour.

Itacimirim

A tiny fishing village about an hour north of Salvador and 5 minutes south of the popular village Praia do Forte. It has a very serene beach, yet is close enough to the more touristy Praia do Forte for those who would like to go out in the evenings.

Praia do Forte

Small, yet touristy and mostly known for its' turtle conservation project. The main street is a pedestrian area lined with colourful Bahian-style stores, pousadas and restaurants.

Day 1: Salvador de Bahia - Itacimirim

A transfer will be waiting to take you on the 1 hour drive to Itacimirim as soon as you arrive at the Salvador de Bahia airport. During our Bahia beach Brazil tour you'll stay at a comfortable pousada with a swimming pool and a palm tree garden. Once you've checked in, you can relax by the pool, have a drink at the restaurant or read a good book in the library.

If you're in the mood for something a little more active, hire a bicycle and go sightseeing in the area or visit the jungle at Mata Atlante. The pousada is made up of several bungalows situated around the swimming pool. A short stroll through the pousada's palm tree garden will lead you to the beach. Each bungalow has a fan, air conditioning and a terrace with a hammock. This is the ideal beginning or ending to a trip through Brazil.

..or Praia do Forte

If you would like to stay in a livelier town on this Brazil trip, then we recommend staying at a pousada in Praia do Forte during our trip around the region. There are several small pousadas in this area. Each of these pousadas has a reception desk, garden with a swimming pool and a bar/ restaurant. Breakfast is included during your stay.

All along the boulevard you'll see cheerfully coloured carts used to sell coconuts and fresh fruit juices. If you don't get too distracted by all the small shops and street life, you might even see a few small monkeys peeking back at you from the trees. Shops are open until 21:00 in the evening and you can choose from an array of restaurants that serve either local or more internationally oriented meals. After dinner you can listen to a live band at one of the area bars.

Eco-resort Praia do Forte

During our Bahia beach Brazil tour you can also stay at a very special kind of accommodation: Brazil's first eco-resort, eco-resort Praia do Forte. The resort is located on the outskirts of Praia do Forte. The town's boulevard and a variety of restaurants and bars are just a 10-minute walk away from the resort.

The spacious, luxury resort is entirely built and decorated in Polynesian style. It has tropical gardens, atmospheric murals, grand statues, four swimming pools, tennis courts, a massage parlour and more. The resort also has its own diving school and surf board rentals.
Praia do Forte - Tropical paradise
Praia do Forte - Colourful buffets
Your stay at this accommodation is based on half board. The resort's restaurant has a truly tantalising buffet made up of dozens of types of fresh fruit, tasty local specialities, mouth-watering fish cuisine and more.

The resort also has over 2000 acres of natural habitat where you can participate in all kinds of activities. You can braid Bahian hats, participate in various workshops, take aqua-aerobics lessons, visit the amphitheatre... there's something for everyone during our Bahia beach Brazil tour.

If you don't feel like participating, you can retreat to the comfort of your spacious room with balcony or veranda and relax in your hammock.

Day 2 - 3: Free Day

Days 2 and 3 of our Bahia beach Brazil tour are free days that you can spend as you wish. Whether you want to spend the day relaxing in a hammock on your balcony or on the veranda or want to lounge by the pool, it's up to you. If you want to go sightseeing in and around Itacimirim, hop on a bicycle. The town's centre is a just a little further land inwards.  If you are staying in Itacimirim, we will organise an evening cocktail making workshop for you. The bartender will teach you how to make the best caipirinha. The barman will give you the recipe, so that you can make some cocktails at home and re-live the memories of your Brazil trip.

Praia do Forte's town centre is a pedestrian area lined with trees and pastel-coloured homes that house boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants and a variety of pousadas. There's also a capoeria school in this area. A taxi cab from Itacimirim to the former fishing village Praia do Forte will cost you about £12. You can also walk part of the way and then take a minibus the rest of the way for about £2 per person. If you walk to the town centre, it will take you about 10 minutes to get there.

Atmosphere and turtles

What makes Praia do Forte so special is that its inhabitants are authentic Bahians. The streets are filled with women chatting on street benches and men playing dominos or cards at a table they've placed on the sidewalk. In the evenings the streets are alive with the sound of music.

Hidden behind a small seaside church lies the TAMAR sea turtle project. The beaches of Praia do Forte are a popular place for sea turtles to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch between January and April and February is the best month to see the hatchlings. The turtle project monitors the development of the turtles and cares for wounded or lost turtles.

If you would like more time on Brazilian beaches after this Praia do Forte tour, take our Morro do Sao Paulo trip to a palm tree island or head off on our easygoing Salvador de Bahia tour.
