Brazil climate information

What's the best time to travel to Brazil?

It doesn't matter which time of year you choose to visit Brazil, you can always take your swimsuit with you! Most of Brazil lies in the tropics, so there's very little variation in temperatures in the northern part of the country; it's warm all year round. The further south you travel, the more varied temperatures will be - although never as varied as they are in Europe. March to November are dry months and December to February are wet months in Southern Brazil. During the Brazilian winter (June to September) the weather in Rio and the surrounding area is similar to the summertime in Northern Europe. The (rain) forest areas Pantanal and the Amazon, are warm and humid all year round. Tropical north eastern Brazil has two seasons, but you'll hardly notice any difference between the two. The average temperature is 23 ° to 27 ° C all year round.

Southern Brazil climate

Southern Brazil Climate: the dry season runs from March to November and December to February are wet and rainy. It can get cool in the evenings from June to September, with a minimum temperature of about 5° C. A sweater and a light winter coat may come in handy during this time of year.

During the Brazilian winter (June to September) weather conditions in Rio and the surrounding area are similar to those of northern Europe in the summertime: there are cloudy days with some rainfall, but also periods with plenty of sun. As you continue travelling south, temperatures will be lower during this time of year.

Central Brazil Climate

The Pantanal and the Amazon can be visited throughout the year:

The Amazon: the best time to visit the Amazon is in July and August, but as you would expect in a rainforest, the Amazon is hot and humid all year round. Usually there are heavy rain showers in the late afternoon. Mornings and early afternoons are mostly sunny.

The Pantanal: this area gets very hot in summer (November until February) with temperatures exceeding 40° C. Most rain falls from December to March. The best time to see animals is during the dry season from April/ May to October. Temperatures rarely drop below 20 ° C, even in the dead of winter (June to July).

Brazil Climate - Coastal areas

Tropical north eastern Brazil has two seasons, but it's difficult to distinguish the two. The average temperature 23 ° to 27 ° C all year round. During the months January to June there may be a nice refreshing rain shower or two. Along the coast the humidity is relatively high and the sun is bright. The sea breeze usually makes spending time by the sea very comfortable. On tropical Fernando de Noronha Island, about 1 hour by plane from Brazil's mainland, the dry season runs from August until April. The best dive time to go diving is from July until November and from November until May sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach. There's quite a lot of rain from April to July which turns the entire coastline emerald green.
